Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan's flagship band, the main catalyst for his music career, and the group that he has been a part of the longest. This section is primarily to showcase the songs that Dave has written for Depeche Mode.
Overview
Since its beginnings in 1980, Depeche Mode has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and in 2020, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dave Gahan, their frontman, is basically known as the voice of Depeche Mode and has been for over 40 years. What not everybody knows, though, is that he is not the band's sole songwriter. As a matter of fact, that award goes to the band's guitarist and keyboardist (and sometimes lead vocalist), Martin Gore. Martin has written the vast majority of the lyrics to Depeche Mode songs and up until 2005, any lyrics that weren't written by him were written by others like Vince Clarke (on Speak and Spell) and Alan Wilder (on Construction Time Again and a few others). It wasn't until after Dave debuted as a solo artist in 2003 with the album, Paper Monsters, that he came back to Depeche Mode and demanded that his own lyrics start making it onto their records. And thus, in 2005 when Playing the Angel was released, Dave had his first songwriting credits in Depeche Mode.
