Happens All the Time
"Happens All the Time" is the second track on the Delta Machine deluxe edition bonus disc.
Lyrics
There's nothing to be gained
When your dreams are in the past
Like stars, we crash and burn
Only to return
Life goes by so fast
So who is left to blame
Nothing's quite the same
We can't live in the past
I'm burning as hot as the sun
And I've only just begun
Love, it fades so fast
Sometimes I forget
All I will regret
When I leave this world behind
Sometimes I'm not sure
What I'm fighting for
It happens all the time
I know I've had enough
Maybe far too much
It's easy to be blind
When it's just me and you
I know what I have to do
I can leave this world behind
No need to feel ashamed
There's nothing to be gained
When your dreams are in the past
Like stars, we crash and burn
Only to return
Times they change so fast
Sometimes I forget
All I will regret
When I leave this world behind
Sometimes I'm not sure
What I'm fighting for
It happens all the time
It happens all the time
It happens all the time
My Take
I feel like this should be Dave's response every time he is asked about his 1996 death episode in an interview. I mean, don't you think he gets asked about that practically all the time? Anyway...this song has somewhat of a similar beat to the previous track on this disc, "Long Time Lie," but the overall sound is a lot mellower. In fact, the synths sound very retro- I feel like I'm listening to hold music from the 1980s. Also, why do I get this strange sense in some places that Dave's vocals don't match the backing instrumentation? It's almost as if the two separate tracks were randomly joined together to form this song. The lyrics alone, though, do have a melancholic beauty to them and I could see them being very effective when put to moving orchestral music like Soulsavers does, but here, that beauty seems to be somewhat lost through the mismatched and even at times, distracting, instrumentation.
