Hourglass
Overview
Hourglass is Dave's second solo album. Work and recording started for it right after the world tour for Depeche Mode's Playing the Angel. Together with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, the three worked on the album at Dave's 11th Floor Studios in New York City. A series of short video clips were produced documenting their progress on the album which can be found on the DaveGahanOfficial YouTube channel. Below is a clip from the channel of their initial greeting.
Hourglass is much more electronic-sounding than Dave's first solo album, Paper Monsters, and also reflects a level of maturity in the songwriting, honed by experience from his first solo album as well as writing songs for Depeche Mode that were included on Playing the Angel. What is also very interesting about this album is that it has almost an even mix of extremely spiritual songs ("Kingdom," "Miracles") and extremely carnal songs ("Deeper and Deeper," "Use You"). So in a nutshell, it's extremely, undeniably, most sincerely...human.
