My Sun

"My Sun" is the ninth track on Angels & Ghosts.

Lyrics

In the warm sun
In the arms of the devil
I've paid my debt
There's a promise here to settle
I feel your sorrow, I feel your pain
Behind the darkest clouds the sun always shines again
I feel your sorrow, I feel your pain
Behind the darkest clouds the sun always shines again
My sun
I want more
That's more than you can imagine
It's no way to live
That's always bound to happen
I'll never get old
Not older than you
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I'm nothing without you
I feel your sorrow, I feel your pain
Behind the darkest clouds the sun always shines again
I feel your sorrow, I feel your pain
Behind the darkest clouds the sun always shines again
My sun
That's the glory, deep in my soul
Inside screaming the devil's taken hold
Through the sound of a passing train
I hear you calling, calling out my name
Calling out my name
Calling out my name

My Take

Again, there's that old-western-sounding guitar sound that I absolutely love! Also, the ending when the horns and all of the instruments come in assure that this is both a track and album that you'll never forget, too. But let's talk about what goes on in between with Dave's vocals. This is nothing fancy vocally, but one can hear his soul being poured out through these words, one simple phrase at a time. And I can't say that his voice fits within any genre, anymore. It basically transcends genre! The word, "sun," is used a lot in the lyrics and appears to symbolize many different things depending on the surrounding context. For example, the "warm sun in the arms of the devil" in the beginning could be referring to a real place- specifically sunny, southern California where he lived during the 1990s when his descent into personal destruction began to really take hold. And the sun "shining again" in the chorus seems to be referring to something completely different- namely, a metaphor for his spiritual rebirth after kicking his destructive addictions once and for all. And it really was his sun that shone- started by him, experienced by him, etc. By the way, random thought- did anyone else immediately think of that Meredith Brooks song, "Bitch," with the "I'm a sinner, I'm a saint" line? It seems like Dave is also declaring a duality within himself similar to how that song does. Plus, not only that, but I also hear echoes of "I Want It All," an earlier song by him here. Overall, this is a strong album closer!
