I Can't Stay

No

"I Can't Stay" is the tenth track on The Light the Dead See.

Lyrics

Even as you talk
I can't understand a word
Lips they keep on moving
Telling tired tales
That have all been heard
So many precious days
And all the parts you've played
You've looked so fine
All those days have gone
You tried to get along
But not all
Not all the time
I can't stay
With you in here anymore
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much for sure
I can't stay
Another day in here with you
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much for sure
Spend your days complaining
Doubt puts only in your head
Turning every page in your book of everything
You should have done instead
So many wasted days
And all the parts you've played
It's the same old song
Well I guess it's up to you
I wonder what you'll do
Don't take, don't take too long
I can't stay
With you in here anymore
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much is true
I can't stay
For another day in here with you
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much is true
I can't stay
With you in here anymore
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much for sure
I can't stay
For another day in here with you
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much for sure
I can't stay
With you in here anymore
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much is true
I can't stay
For another day in here with you
I feel like my time is running out
I know that much for sure
I know that much for sure

Dave's Take

Dave and Rich Machin talk about this song at the 2:51 mark.

My Take

Sonically, this song alternates back and forth between very sparse-sounding verses and full, noisy choruses, often relying on a single acoustic instrument to convey an emotion or two, which the acoustic guitar and violin serve to do in this song. But it seems like that kind of a sonic theme is recurring amongst much of Soulsavers' works. Also, can Dave rock a falsetto croon or what? Lyrically, this song almost seems to lie along the same vein as "Use You," another song about the urgent desire to escape a bad situation, albeit this one is much gentler in its delivery. I can't help but be reminded of the predicament that Dave's wife, Jennifer, must've went through when they were first dating in the mid-1990s when he was still heavily struggling with his drug addiction. She basically couldn't be around him during this time and she let him know that, perhaps in a similar manner as in the words in this song.1
